T-Mobile's background diagnostics agent, which reports network and device measurements to T-Mobile. It is safe to disable: you lose nothing most people will miss.

What it does

T-Mobile Diagnostics is a background agent signed by T-Mobile and found on Samsung and Motorola phones the carrier sells; Motorola models also carry a companion package, com.tmobile.echolocate.system. T-Mobile's help describes its device diagnostics as covering signal strength, crashes, dropped-call records, battery performance and app and network usage, and says message content and browsing are excluded. It has no screen of its own.

Also shown as Echolocate.

If you disable it

Nothing you will notice. T-Mobile receives fewer network reports from your phone.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.tmobile.echolocate

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.tmobile.echolocate

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.tmobile.echolocate

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.tmobile.echolocate

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery
