What it does
System launcher is the home screen on MIUI and HyperOS phones: app icons, folders, the app drawer, widgets and wallpaper scrolling. On Android 10 and later the default launcher also hosts the recent apps screen and much of gesture navigation, which is why Xiaomi's launcher keeps doing that work even when you set another home app. It runs whenever the phone is on.

If you disable it
Without another launcher you are left with no home screen. Even with one, community testers report that recent apps and navigation gestures stop working on MIUI 12 and later.
How to disable it
On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.
Disable it (reversible)
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.miui.homeTurn it back on
adb shell pm enable com.miui.homeThe stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.
Uninstall for the main user
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.miui.homeRestore after an uninstall
