Xiaomi's floating windows feature, which opens apps in small movable windows on top of other apps. You can disable it, with a caveat: read what stops working first.

What it does

Floating windows lets you open an app in a resizable window that floats over whatever else is on screen, started from the recent apps screen, a sidebar or a gesture. It is a MIUI feature; HyperOS builds handle some of this in other system parts. It runs only while a floating window is open.

If you disable it

Floating windows may stop opening. Community testers report that on some phones they keep working anyway because other system parts handle them.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.miui.freeform

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.miui.freeform

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.miui.freeform

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.miui.freeform

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Nothing beyond the app's own settings.
