Samsung's Always On Display, which shows the clock and notifications on the screen while the phone is idle. You can disable it, with a caveat: read what stops working first.

What it does

Always On Display shows the time, date, battery and notification icons on the screen while the phone is locked and idle, either always, on tap or on a schedule. Community testers report that this package also draws the lock-screen clock styles. It is updated through the Galaxy Store and runs whenever the screen is off and AOD is on.

Also shown as AlwaysOnDisplay.

If you disable it

Always On Display stops, and lock-screen clock styles may break. Turning AOD off in Settings saves the same power without disabling the package.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.samsung.android.app.aodservice

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.samsung.android.app.aodservice

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.android.app.aodservice

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.samsung.android.app.aodservice

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Nothing beyond its settings; it shows notification icons from apps on the phone.

Uses some power while AOD is on; Samsung turns AOD off in Power saving mode.
