Xiaomi's local backup tool, which saves apps, settings and data to the phone's storage or a computer and restores them. You can disable it, with a caveat: read what stops working first.

What it does

Backup powers the local backup and restore option in Xiaomi's settings, which saves system settings, apps and their data to the phone's storage so you can copy the backup off and restore it later. Community testers report it also works with Xiaomi's phone-to-phone transfer tools. It runs only while a backup or restore is in progress.

Also shown as Local backups.

If you disable it

Local backup and restore in Settings stops working, and existing local backups cannot be restored until you enable it again.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.miui.backup

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.miui.backup

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.miui.backup

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.miui.backup

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Reads app data and settings to write backup files on the phone; nothing is uploaded unless you copy the files elsewhere.
