Google Play services
Google's background service layer that signs you in, syncs data and gives apps location, push messages and other Google features.
Google package
Google's background updater for security data such as certificate pins, Certificate Transparency logs and emergency numbers. Keep it: ConfigUpdater is needed for the phone, its updates or its security.
ConfigUpdater is a Google component that installs small data updates Android can use without a full system update. Android defines a set of these update channels, covering items such as TLS certificate pins, the list of trusted Certificate Transparency logs, premium SMS short codes, carrier identification data and the emergency number database, and this package receives them on phones with Google apps. It runs in the background only when new data arrives.
Also shown as Config Update.
The phone keeps the security and carrier data it already has, so certificate checks, premium SMS warnings and emergency number lists slowly go out of date until the next full system update.
On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.
Disable it (reversible)
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.configupdaterTurn it back on
adb shell pm enable com.google.android.configupdaterThe stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.
Uninstall for the main user
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.configupdaterRestore after an uninstall
adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.configupdaterNew to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.
Downloads data files from Google; it does not handle personal content.
