Google Play services is the large background package Google installs on every Android phone that ships with Google apps. It handles Google sign-in, contact and account sync, location services, push notifications for many apps and the privacy and security settings tied to your Google Account. Other apps call into it instead of carrying that code themselves, and Google updates it through the Play Store every few weeks. It runs all the time, so it shows up in battery, data and memory lists on almost every phone.
Also shown as Google Play Services, GMS, Google Mobile Services.
Google sign-in, the Play Store, contact sync, push notifications in many apps and accurate location stop working, and many apps refuse to open until it is turned back on. Google's own listing warns that apps may not work without it.
On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.
Disable it (reversible)
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.gmsTurn it back on
adb shell pm enable com.google.android.gmsThe stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.
Uninstall for the main user
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.gmsRestore after an uninstall
adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.gmsNew to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.
Handles your Google Account sign-in and sync, uses location to answer apps' location requests, and sends diagnostics to Google under Google's Privacy Policy.
It often sits near the top of battery lists because location, sync and notification work requested by other apps is counted against it; Google's help page says it does not make the battery drain faster.
com.google.android.gms is Google Play services. Google's background service layer that signs you in, syncs data and gives apps location, push messages and other Google features.
Keep it: Google Play services is needed for the phone, its updates or its security. On most phones it takes ADB.
Google sign-in, the Play Store, contact sync, push notifications in many apps and accurate location stop working, and many apps refuse to open until it is turned back on. Google's own listing warns that apps may not work without it.
No. Settings does not offer it, and Google's help page says it cannot be force stopped or uninstalled. Disabling it with ADB is possible but breaks most Google features and many third-party apps.
Other apps ask it for your location, account sync and notifications, and that work is counted against Google Play services instead of the app that asked. Review which apps have location and background access to cut the load.
