The Pixel home screen and app drawer, which also hosts the recent-apps view used by gesture navigation. Keep it: Pixel Launcher is needed for the phone, its updates or its security.

What it does

Pixel Launcher is the home screen on Google Pixel phones. It draws the home screen, app drawer, widgets, the search bar and the swipe-left Discover feed, and it also hosts the recent-apps overview that gesture navigation and the overview button rely on. It runs whenever you are on the home screen or switching apps.

Also shown as Nexus Launcher.

If you disable it

Without another home app you have no home screen at all, and community testers report that recent apps and gesture navigation stop working even with another launcher installed.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.apps.nexuslauncher

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.google.android.apps.nexuslauncher

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.apps.nexuslauncher

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.apps.nexuslauncher

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Stores your home screen layout on the device; the search bar and Discover feed send queries through the Google app.
