What it does

System UI is the part of Android that draws everything around your apps: the status bar, notification shade, quick settings, lock screen, volume and power menus, screenshot tools and the navigation bar. It comes from the Android Open Source Project and every phone maker customizes it, and it starts at boot and runs the whole time the phone is on. The message that System UI has stopped means this process crashed and restarted.

Also shown as SystemUI.

If you disable it

The status bar, notifications, lock screen and navigation disappear, which can leave the phone unusable or locked. Never disable or uninstall it.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.android.systemui

Restore it after a per-user uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.android.systemui

Data and battery
