A backup helper that copies shared storage files into full backups made over ADB. It is safe to disable: you lose nothing most people will miss.

What it does

This package is the Android backup agent for shared storage, the area that holds photos, downloads and other files that apps share. Full backups, such as those made with the adb backup command, use it to include those files. It has no app label, so Settings shows the package name, and it runs only during such a backup.

Also shown as Shared Storage Backup.

If you disable it

Full backups made over ADB no longer include shared storage files.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.sharedstoragebackup

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.android.sharedstoragebackup

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.sharedstoragebackup

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.android.sharedstoragebackup

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Copies shared files into a backup only while one is running.
