Android's system credential store that lets apps use certificates and private keys you have approved. Keep it: Key Chain is needed for the phone, its updates or its security.

What it does

Key Chain is the Android service behind the system-wide credential store. Apps ask it for a user certificate and private key, such as for a work VPN, Wi-Fi or a website that requires a client certificate, and it shows the prompt where you choose which credential to allow. It also manages the trusted CA certificates you add.

If you disable it

Apps, VPNs and Wi-Fi networks that use installed certificates fail to connect, and you cannot grant certificate access to apps. Community lists rate removal as unsafe.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.keychain

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.android.keychain

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.keychain

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.android.keychain

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Holds the certificates and keys you installed, protected by the phone's hardware keystore.
