Samsung's media storage service that indexes photos, videos and music so apps can find and save them. Keep it: Sec Media Storage is needed for the phone, its updates or its security.

What it does

Sec Media Storage is Samsung's version of Android's media store. It keeps the index of photos, videos, audio and downloads on the phone, and apps such as Camera, Gallery and music players use it to save and find media. It runs in the background whenever files are added or an app asks for media.

If you disable it

Camera saves, Gallery, music players and file pickers can fail or show nothing. Your files stay on storage but apps cannot find them.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.samsung.android.providers.media

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.samsung.android.providers.media

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.android.providers.media

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.samsung.android.providers.media

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.
