Contacts Storage is the content provider that stores contacts and the call log on a Galaxy phone. Samsung uses its own version in place of Android's standard one, and every app that reads contacts, from the Phone app to WhatsApp, goes through it, as do the accounts that sync contacts. It runs whenever any app or account touches contacts.
Contacts, caller names and the call log disappear from every app, contact sync stops, and calling and messaging apps can crash.
