Samsung's text messaging app, discontinued in the US in July 2026 in favor of Google Messages. You can disable it, with a caveat: read what stops working first.

What it does

Samsung Messages is the SMS, MMS and RCS chat app Samsung shipped on Galaxy phones for years. In the US, Samsung ended it on phones running Android 12 or newer from July 6, 2026, moved conversations to Google Messages, and said the app would become removable in a later One UI release. Outside the US it may still be the default messaging app. It runs whenever a message arrives while it is the default.

Also shown as Samsung Messages.

If you disable it

If it is your default messaging app, you stop sending and receiving texts until you set another one, such as Google Messages, as default. Texting from a Galaxy tablet through your phone may also stop.

How to disable it

Settings offers Disable for this package on most phones. Open Settings > Apps > Messages > Disable.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.samsung.android.messaging

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.samsung.android.messaging

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.android.messaging

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.samsung.android.messaging

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Stores your messages on the phone; RCS chats pass through your carrier's or Google's servers depending on the region.
