Messages is Google's texting app. It sends and receives SMS and MMS through your carrier and RCS chats over data, with typing indicators, read receipts, high-quality media and group chats that can include iPhone users. Also shown as Google Messages.
If it is your default SMS app, new texts have nowhere to show until you install another messaging app and make it the default. Settings usually will not disable it while it is the default.
Settings offers Disable for this package on most phones. Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Messages > Disable.
Disable it (reversible)
