A background helper for Bixby voice features on older Galaxy phones, later shown in Settings as Bixby Dictation. It is safe to disable: you lose nothing most people will miss.

What it does

Bixby Service is a support package for Bixby voice features that Samsung shipped on Galaxy phones from the Note8 era to the Galaxy S20 and Note20. It handled speech-to-text and other voice tasks that the Bixby app requested, and Samsung's application lists for Android 11 label it Bixby Dictation. It runs only when Bixby or voice typing asks for it. Device surveys of newer Galaxy phones no longer show this package, so you are most likely to find it on an older phone.

Also shown as Bixby Dictation.

If you disable it

Bixby voice requests and Bixby-based dictation stop working on the phones that have it. Google voice typing is not affected.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.samsung.android.bixby.service

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.samsung.android.bixby.service

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.android.bixby.service

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.samsung.android.bixby.service

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Speech it processes is sent to Samsung's servers as part of a Bixby request.
