Xiaomi's malware scanning engine, with Avast, AVL and Tencent engines, that checks apps when you install or update them. Keep it: System security components is needed for the phone, its updates or its security.

What it does

System security components, long known as Guard Provider, is the scanning engine behind the virus checks in Xiaomi's Security app. It bundles antivirus engines from Avast, AVL and Tencent, lets you pick one, and scans apps as they are installed or updated. On HyperOS it also shows the prompt that confirms an app install over USB. It works on demand when an app is installed and during manual scans.

Also shown as Guard Provider.

If you disable it

Community testers report that app installs and updates break or slow down badly without it, including installs from Google Play, and USB installs from a computer stop showing their confirmation prompt.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.miui.guardprovider

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.miui.guardprovider

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.miui.guardprovider

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.miui.guardprovider

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

It downloads virus definitions and checks apps against them; in 2019 Check Point found its updates traveled without encryption, and Xiaomi fixed the flaw after the report.
