Gemini

Google's Gemini assistant app, which takes over from Google Assistant on Pixels and many other phones. It is safe to disable: you lose nothing most people will miss.

What it does

Gemini is Google's AI assistant app. It answers questions, writes and summarizes text, works with images and on-screen content, and on many phones takes over the assistant role when you long-press the power button or say Hey Google. It was called Bard until 2024, which is why it keeps the bard package name.

Also shown as Google Gemini, Bard.

If you disable it

The Gemini app goes away and the assistant shortcut falls back to Google Assistant or to nothing, depending on the phone.

How to disable it

Settings offers Disable for this package on most phones. Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Gemini > Disable.

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.apps.bard

adb shell pm enable com.google.android.apps.bard

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.apps.bard

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.apps.bard

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Sends your prompts, and any screen or image content you share, to Google; activity is saved to your Google Account unless you turn Gemini Apps Activity off.
