Meta's Facebook app, which Samsung preinstalls on many Galaxy phones, sometimes as a placeholder until updated. It is safe to disable: you lose nothing most people will miss.

What it does

This is the Facebook app from Meta. Samsung preinstalls it on many Galaxy phones, and on some models it ships as a small placeholder that becomes the full app after an update from the Play Store. Meta's helper packages for app updates and installs come with it. It runs in the background for notifications once you sign in.

If you disable it

Nothing beyond the app itself. You can install it again from the Play Store at any time.

How to disable it

Settings offers Disable for this package on most phones. Open Settings > Apps > Facebook > Disable.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.facebook.katana

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.facebook.katana

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.facebook.katana

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.facebook.katana

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Once you sign in, Meta collects activity from the app under its privacy policy.

Can use battery and data in the background for notifications and refresh when signed in.
