A Verizon background service for app-directed texts, the hidden carrier messages meant for an app rather than your inbox. You can disable it, with a caveat: read what stops working first.

What it does

AppDirectedSMS is a Verizon-signed background service on Pixel phones and some other Android phones. Going by its name, it receives app-directed text messages: hidden SMS that the network addresses to a particular app instead of your inbox, for example to tell a voicemail app a new message is waiting or to start carrier setup. Verizon has not documented it. Like the other Verizon parts of the Pixel image, it is present whichever carrier you use.

If you disable it

On a Verizon line, carrier-triggered features such as voicemail notices or Wi-Fi Calling setup may stop arriving; community lists link it to Wi-Fi Calling and SMS. With another carrier's SIM, nothing you will notice.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.verizon.services

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.verizon.services

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.verizon.services

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.verizon.services

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.
