Samsung's Phone app on Galaxy devices: the dialer, call log, voicemail access and call settings. Keep it: Phone is needed for the phone, its updates or its security.

What it does

This is the Phone app Samsung puts on Galaxy phones. It holds the keypad, recent calls, favorites and the entry points to voicemail, call blocking and Caller ID and spam protection, and it works together with the in-call screen package to place and receive calls. It runs whenever you make a call or open the app. Samsung updates it through the Galaxy Store.

Also shown as Samsung Phone.

If you disable it

You lose the default dialer, call history and call settings. Calls may still ring through another phone app if one is set as default, but Samsung's calling features stop.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.samsung.android.dialer

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.samsung.android.dialer

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.android.dialer

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.samsung.android.dialer

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Reads your contacts and call history on the phone; the spam-protection feature checks numbers with Samsung's caller-ID partner.
