Samsung's text-to-speech voices on Galaxy phones, an alternative to Google's speech engine. It is safe to disable: you lose nothing most people will miss.

What it does

Samsung TTS converts text into speech for Samsung features and, where allowed, other apps. You choose between Samsung's engine and Google's in the text-to-speech settings and can download extra voices. Samsung lists it in the Galaxy Store. Community reports say that from One UI 7 Samsung limits its voices to Samsung's own apps. It runs whenever something is read aloud with it.

Also shown as Samsung TTS.

If you disable it

Apps that read text aloud switch to Google's speech engine, if installed. Samsung features that use Samsung voices, such as Bixby's spoken replies, may fall silent.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.samsung.SMT

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.samsung.SMT

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.SMT

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.samsung.SMT

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.
