OPPO's background app manager, which closes idle apps to save memory and battery and runs RAM expansion. You can disable it, with a caveat: read what stops working first.

What it does

Athena is the process manager on ColorOS and OxygenOS. It decides when background apps are closed to save memory and battery, and it powers RAM expansion, which borrows storage as extra memory, and the close-all button in recent apps. Community testers report it closes some apps, such as browsers and automation tools, very quickly. It runs constantly.

If you disable it

RAM expansion and the close-all button in recent apps stop working, and battery life may change. In return, apps tend to stay open longer in the background.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.oplus.athena

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.oplus.athena

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.oplus.athena

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.oplus.athena

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Watches which apps are running and how much memory they use, on the phone.

Its app killing saves battery; if one app keeps closing, allow that app to run in the background in its battery settings first.
