Motorola's part of the first-run setup, which community testers link to Google Play system updates. Keep it: Setup is needed for the phone, its updates or its security.

What it does

Setup adds Motorola's own steps to the setup screens you see when the phone is new or reset, alongside Google's setup. Community testers report that freezing it also stops Google Play system updates, the monthly module updates that deliver some security fixes. It runs mainly during setup and stays installed afterward.

Also shown as Motorola Setup.

If you disable it

Community testers report that Google Play system updates stop, and the next factory reset may not complete Motorola's setup steps.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.motorola.setup

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.motorola.setup

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.motorola.setup

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.motorola.setup

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.
