Xiaomi's Gallery app for photos and videos, which also powers the screenshot preview, private album and Xiaomi Cloud photo sync. You can disable it, with a caveat: read what stops working first.

What it does

Gallery is the default photo and video viewer and editor on Xiaomi phones. It organizes pictures by album, date and place, edits photos, adds protective watermarks and keeps a password-protected private album. It also opens the editor behind screenshot previews and handles photo sync with Xiaomi Cloud when you turn that on. It runs when opened and in the background while syncing or indexing new photos.

If you disable it

Photos open in another app instead, the screenshot preview and its editor stop working, the private album becomes unreachable and Xiaomi Cloud photo sync stops. Photo files on the phone are not deleted.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.miui.gallery

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.miui.gallery

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.miui.gallery

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.miui.gallery

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Reads your photos and videos; with sync on it uploads them to Xiaomi Cloud, which Xiaomi says encrypts them and does not use them for ads.

Where it appears
