What it does

Private Compute Services is a Google system component that acts as the network bridge for features inside Android's Private Compute Core, such as Smart Reply, Now Playing and Live Caption. Those features are not allowed to reach the internet themselves, so this package fetches model updates on their behalf and takes part in federated learning and analytics that Google says strip identifying information. Google publishes its source code on GitHub and records its releases in a public code transparency log.

Also shown as PCS.

If you disable it

Private Compute Core features keep the models already on the phone but stop receiving updates, so features such as Now Playing and Smart Reply can go stale over time.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.as.oss

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.google.android.as.oss

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.as.oss

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.as.oss

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Downloads models and settings for on-device features and sends aggregated learning results through federated learning; Google publishes its code for outside review.
