Named system app
What is Android System Intelligence?
Google's on-device engine for Live Caption, Smart Text Selection, app suggestions and other smart features.
What is Android System Intelligence?
Android System Intelligence is the part of Android that runs Google's on-device machine learning features, such as Live Caption, Smart Text Selection, app suggestions and smart actions on notifications. It is a system component made by Google, and on older phones it was listed as Device Personalization Services.
Google's own description lists what it powers: Live Caption for media, Screen Attention (the screen stays on while you look at it), Smart Autorotate, easier copy and paste between apps, app predictions in the launcher, action buttons on notifications, Smart Text Selection, turning addresses and numbers into tappable links, Live Translate, app search, Assistant voice typing in Gboard and Now Playing music recognition. Not every phone gets every feature; Pixels get the most.
To do that work it needs to see a lot: text on screen, notifications, audio playing on the phone and, for Screen Attention, the front camera. Google places it inside Private Compute Core, a protected area of Android that has no direct network access. When its models need updating, the traffic goes through a separate open-source app, Private Compute Services.
Can I disable it?
Yes, on most phones you can disable it, but you lose every feature it powers, so treat it as an advanced change rather than a free cleanup. On Pixels and many other phones, Settings > Apps > (show system apps) > Android System Intelligence offers a Disable button. Where the button is greyed out, ADB works:
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.asWhat stops working: Live Caption, Now Playing, Screen Attention, Smart Autorotate, notification smart actions, Smart Text Selection, app predictions in the launcher and the other features listed above. Calls, texts, apps and updates are not affected.
There is a gentler option if your concern is privacy rather than the features. Google's help page describes two controls: analytics collection for these components is optional and can be turned off under Settings > Privacy > Usage & diagnostics, and you can wipe what it has stored under Settings > Security & privacy > More security & privacy > Android System Intelligence > Clear data. You can also switch off single features, such as Screen Attention or Now Playing, in their own settings.
Does it drain battery or data?
It can use some battery, because the features it runs are always listening or watching for their moment. Now Playing samples nearby audio at intervals, Screen Attention checks the front camera while the screen is on, and Live Caption processes any audio that plays. Each of these shows up as Android System Intelligence in the battery list.
If its share looks high, turn off the features you do not use before reaching for the Disable button. Now Playing and Screen Attention are the usual suspects on Pixels. A short spike after an update is normal too, because new models are being set up.
Data use is small. The component itself has no network access; model updates come through Private Compute Services, and Google says those requests are recorded in a Network Usage Log you can view from Settings once developer options are on.
Why did it just update?
It updated because Google ships Android System Intelligence through the Google Play Store, separately from your phone's system updates. New releases carry improved models for features such as Smart Text Selection and Live Caption, new features for recent Pixels and bug fixes. Because it is a system app, the update installs over the factory version, and Settings may offer "Uninstall updates" to roll it back.
Its companion, Private Compute Services, updates the same way and often around the same time.
Which packages are behind it?
Two packages work together:
- com.google.android.as is Android System Intelligence itself, the component that runs the smart features on the phone.
- com.google.android.as.oss is Private Compute Services, the open-source bridge that fetches model updates for it over a privacy-preserving path.
Disabling Private Compute Services alone cuts off those model updates, so features may keep working with what they already have but stop improving. Disabling Android System Intelligence turns the features off.
If something goes wrong
The usual fix for misbehaving smart features is to clear Android System Intelligence's data and restart the phone. Use the path Google documents: Settings > Security & privacy > More security & privacy > Android System Intelligence > Clear data. On phones without that menu, Settings > Apps > Android System Intelligence > Storage > Clear storage does the same.
If an update broke something, such as Live Caption no longer appearing or copy and paste suggestions failing, open its App info screen and choose Uninstall updates, then let the Play Store reinstall the latest version.
If you disabled it and want it back, turn it on from Settings > Apps, or with ADB:
adb shell pm enable com.google.android.as
adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.asHeavy battery use that continues after you turn off Now Playing and Screen Attention is worth reporting to Google through the app's Play Store listing; include the battery screen's per-app figures so the report is useful.

Questions people ask
Is Android System Intelligence spyware?
No. Google documents it as a system component that runs inside Private Compute Core without direct network access. It does read on-screen text, notifications and audio for its features, which is why Google keeps that processing on the phone.
Was Android System Intelligence called something else before?
Yes. Earlier Android versions showed the same package as Device Personalization Services.
Will disabling it turn off Live Caption?
Yes. Live Caption, Now Playing, Smart Text Selection and the other features Google lists for it stop working while it is disabled.
