A Pixel system app that transfers data from your old phone during setup and is not meant to be opened on its own. It is safe to disable: you lose nothing most people will miss.

What it does

Data Transfer Tool is a Google system app that Pixel phones use during setup to bring data across from an old phone. Google's own store listing says it is installed automatically on Pixels and asks people not to install it themselves. It runs as part of the first-run setup flow and is idle once setup is complete.

If you disable it

Nothing on a phone that is already set up. A factory reset restores it for the next setup.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.apps.pixelmigrate

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.google.android.apps.pixelmigrate

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.apps.pixelmigrate

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.apps.pixelmigrate

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Moves the data you select from the old phone during setup; it does nothing afterward.
