Phone and Messaging Storage
The database that stores your SMS and MMS messages and the access point settings for mobile data.
Android (AOSP) package
The background service that sends and downloads picture messages and group texts over the carrier network. Keep it: MmsService is needed for the phone, its updates or its security.
MmsService is the Android component that actually transmits MMS messages. When your messaging app sends a picture, a long text or a group message, it hands the message to this service, which connects through the carrier's MMS settings to send it, and incoming MMS are downloaded the same way. It runs only while an MMS is being sent or received.
Picture messages and many group texts fail to send or download; plain SMS and RCS chats keep working.
On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.
Disable it (reversible)
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.mms.serviceTurn it back on
adb shell pm enable com.android.mms.serviceThe stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.
Uninstall for the main user
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.mms.serviceRestore after an uninstall
adb shell cmd package install-existing com.android.mms.serviceNew to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.
