Dynamic System Updates
A developer feature that boots a test Android system image without replacing the phone's installed system.
Android (AOSP) package
The system package that runs commands sent over ADB and captures bug reports. Keep it: Shell is needed for the phone, its updates or its security.
Shell is the Android package behind the command line you reach with adb shell from a computer, and it holds the permissions those commands run with. It also builds bug reports when you request one from Developer options. It runs only when a computer sends commands over ADB or a bug report is being captured.
ADB commands and bug reports stop working, and because ADB is the usual way to re-enable disabled packages, you may be unable to undo other changes without a factory reset.
On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.
Disable it (reversible)
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.shellTurn it back on
adb shell pm enable com.android.shellThe stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.
Uninstall for the main user
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.shellRestore after an uninstall
adb shell cmd package install-existing com.android.shellNew to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.
Bug reports it captures can contain logs, app lists and other personal details; they stay on the device unless you share them.
