The background service that applies automatic proxy settings for networks configured to use them. You can disable it, with a caveat: read what stops working first.

What it does

ProxyHandler is a small Android service that runs a local proxy for networks configured with an automatic proxy script, forwarding web requests through whichever server the script picks. It works together with PacProcessor and is active only when a network or VPN uses that kind of proxy setup.

If you disable it

Networks that rely on an automatic proxy stop loading web content; networks without a proxy are unaffected.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.proxyhandler

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.android.proxyhandler

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.proxyhandler

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.android.proxyhandler

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery
