Google's small image editor that opens when you tap Edit on a screenshot to crop, draw or highlight. It is safe to disable: you lose nothing most people will miss.

What it does

Markup is a small Google image editor preinstalled on Pixels and many other phones with Google apps. It opens when you tap Edit after taking a screenshot, and other apps can send images to it, letting you crop, draw, add text and highlight before saving or sharing. It only runs when it is opened.

If you disable it

The Edit button after a screenshot no longer opens an editor; screenshots are still saved.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.markup

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.google.android.markup

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.markup

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.markup

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Edits images on the device and saves a copy where you choose.
