Google's contacts app for viewing, editing and backing up the people saved in your Google Account. You can disable it, with a caveat: read what stops working first.

What it does

Contacts is Google's address book app, preinstalled on Pixels and many other phones. It shows, adds and edits the contacts stored on the phone and in your accounts, merges duplicates, highlights birthdays and can bring back contacts you removed within the past month. The contacts themselves live in Android's contacts storage and your Google Account, so other apps can still read them when this app is off.

Also shown as Google Contacts.

If you disable it

You lose the contact list and editor; Phone and Messages still see existing contacts, but links to add or edit a contact stop working until you install another contacts app.

How to disable it

Settings offers Disable for this package on most phones. Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Contacts > Disable.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.contacts

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.google.android.contacts

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.contacts

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.contacts

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Reads and edits your contacts, which sync to your Google Account through the contacts sync service.
