Google's email app for Gmail and other email accounts, preinstalled on almost every phone that ships Google apps. It is safe to disable: you lose nothing most people will miss.

What it does

Gmail is Google's email app. It handles Gmail accounts and can also add Outlook, Yahoo and other IMAP or Exchange accounts, with notifications, search and spam filtering. It is preinstalled on phones that ship Google apps and syncs mail in the background on the schedule each account uses.

If you disable it

Email notifications and the Gmail app stop; your mail stays in your account and can be read on the web or in another email app.

How to disable it

Settings offers Disable for this package on most phones. Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Gmail > Disable.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.gm

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.google.android.gm

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.gm

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.gm

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Syncs your email to the device and handles it under Google's privacy policy.
