A simple viewer that displays local HTML files such as the open source license notices in Settings. You can disable it, with a caveat: read what stops working first.

What it does

HTML Viewer is a minimal Android app that opens local HTML files, most often the third-party license notices under Legal information in the About phone settings. It uses Android System WebView to render the page and runs only when such a file is opened.

If you disable it

Legal notices and other local HTML files may not open. Community lists warn that removing it caused boot loops on some Xiaomi phones, so disable rather than uninstall.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.htmlviewer

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.android.htmlviewer

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.htmlviewer

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.android.htmlviewer

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Nothing beyond the files it displays.
