The system provider that shows internal storage and SD cards in the file picker and in file apps. Keep it: External Storage is needed for the phone, its updates or its security.

What it does

External Storage is the Android document provider that presents the phone's shared storage, SD cards and USB drives to the system file picker. When an app asks you to open or save a file, the storage locations you browse come from this package. It runs whenever a file picker or file manager reads storage.

If you disable it

Internal storage and SD cards disappear from the file picker, so apps can no longer open or save files through it.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.externalstorage

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.android.externalstorage

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.externalstorage

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.android.externalstorage

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Lists files in shared storage only when you browse them; the requesting app gets access to the files you pick.
