Google TV, the movie and show app that replaced Google Play Movies & TV on phones. It is safe to disable: you lose nothing most people will miss.

What it does

Google TV is Google's app for buying, renting and watching movies and shows and for browsing what is available across streaming services. It replaced Google Play Movies & TV, which is why it keeps the videos package name, and it can act as a remote for a Google TV device. It runs only when you open it.

Also shown as Google Play Movies & TV, Play Movies.

If you disable it

You cannot watch purchased movies on this phone until you turn it back on or use another device; nothing else depends on it.

How to disable it

Settings offers Disable for this package on most phones. Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Google TV > Disable.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.videos

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.google.android.videos

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.videos

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.videos

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Uses your purchases and watch history in your Google Account for recommendations.
