The open source picker for ringtones, notification sounds and alarm tones. You can disable it, with a caveat: read what stops working first.

What it does

Sounds is the Android screen for choosing ringtones, notification sounds and alarm tones, opened from sound settings or by apps that let you pick a tone. Phones with Google apps often use Google's version, com.google.android.soundpicker, and phone makers may substitute their own. It runs only while the picker is open.

If you disable it

You can no longer pick new ringtones or notification sounds; the sounds already set keep playing.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.soundpicker

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.android.soundpicker

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.soundpicker

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.android.soundpicker

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Reads the list of sound files on the device when the picker opens.
