Google's file manager and storage cleaner, preinstalled on many Android phones, including Android Go models. It is safe to disable: you lose nothing most people will miss.

What it does

Files by Google is a file manager that browses downloads, photos, documents and SD cards, suggests junk files, duplicates and old media to delete, plays media and sends files to nearby devices without an internet connection. It is the main file manager on many lower-cost and Android Go phones and comes preinstalled on plenty of others. It checks storage now and then to suggest space to free up.

Also shown as Files Go.

If you disable it

You lose this file manager and its cleaning suggestions; the system file picker that other apps use keeps working.

How to disable it

Settings offers Disable for this package on most phones. Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Files by Google > Disable.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.apps.nbu.files

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.google.android.apps.nbu.files

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.apps.nbu.files

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.apps.nbu.files

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.

Data and battery

Reads file names and sizes on the device to sort them and suggest cleanup; files stay on the device unless you choose to back them up.
