Google Maps, the navigation and places app preinstalled on phones that ship Google apps. It is safe to disable: you lose nothing most people will miss.
What it does
Google Maps provides maps, place search, turn-by-turn navigation, live traffic and transit directions. Other apps hand addresses and navigation requests to it, and Android Auto uses it for in-car navigation. If you turn on Timeline or location sharing it also uses location in the background.

If you disable it
Address links and navigation requests from other apps open in the browser or another maps app, and Android Auto loses Google Maps.
How to disable it
Settings offers Disable for this package on most phones. Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Maps > Disable.
Disable it (reversible)
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.apps.mapsTurn it back on
adb shell pm enable com.google.android.apps.mapsThe stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.
Uninstall for the main user
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.apps.mapsRestore after an uninstall

Data and battery
Uses your location for navigation and, when you turn them on, for Timeline and location sharing; searches are saved to your Google Account unless that activity setting is off.
