The open source storage cleanup tool behind Free up space and automatic removal of backed-up photos. You can disable it, with a caveat: read what stops working first.

What it does

Storage Manager is the Android app behind the Free up space screen in storage settings. It suggests downloads, unused apps and backed-up photos to remove, and its automatic option can delete backed-up photos and videos after a set number of days. Phones with Google apps may run Google's version, com.google.android.storagemanager, instead.

If you disable it

The Free up space screen and automatic cleanup stop working; your files are not affected.

How to disable it

On most phones Settings greys out Disable for this package, so ADB is the way to turn it off. The commands below work without root and can be undone.

Disable it (reversible)

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.android.storagemanager

Turn it back on

adb shell pm enable com.android.storagemanager

The stronger option removes it for your user only; the original copy stays on the phone and a factory reset brings it back. Prefer disabling: it is easier to undo.

Uninstall for the main user

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.android.storagemanager

Restore after an uninstall

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.android.storagemanager

New to ADB? Set it up in about ten minutes.
