What is Google One?
Google's app for managing account storage, phone backup and Google One plans; check your backups before removing it.
What is Google One?
Google One is Google's app for managing your Google account storage and your phone's backup, and the place where you buy or manage a Google One storage plan. Its Play listing gives it two jobs: backing up what matters on your phone, such as photos, contacts and messages, into the 15 GB of free storage that comes with every Google account, and showing how that storage is shared between Drive, Gmail and Photos.
Many phones come with the Google One app preinstalled. You do not need a paid plan to use it; without one, it shows how your free storage is split between Drive, Gmail and Photos and offers tools to clear space. With a plan, it is where you change or cancel your subscription.
Android's device backup is now labeled "Backup by Google One" in Settings. You turn it on or off under Settings > Google > All services > Backup, and Google's help also points to the Google One app for backup settings and for fixing backup errors.
Can I disable it?
Yes. Your storage, your plan and your backups belong to your Google account, not to the app, so they keep working and can be managed on the web. On many phones Settings > Apps > Google One offers Uninstall or Disable. Where it does not, ADB works:
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.apps.subscriptions.redWhat changes: you lose the storage manager, the Google One plan screens and the app's backup settings and status. Google's own troubleshooting for backup problems tells people to install or update the Google One app, so after disabling it, open Settings > Google > All services > Backup and confirm that a recent backup still appears. If it stops updating, turn the app back on.
Disabling the app does not delete anything stored in your Google account, and it does not cancel a paid plan. If you want the plan to end, cancel it first.
Does it drain battery or data?
It can use data and some battery while a backup runs, because backing up photos, contacts, messages and device data means uploading them to your Google account. Backups are scheduled in the background, so that work can show up under Google One or Google Play services in battery and data lists.
The first backup after setting up a phone is the largest; Google's help says a backup can take up to 24 hours. After that, each backup only uploads what changed. Photos and videos are usually the heaviest part, and they are handled by Google Photos' own backup.
If you are on limited mobile data, connect to Wi-Fi for backups; Google's troubleshooting suggests Wi-Fi when backups fail on mobile data as well.
Why did it just update?
It updated because Google ships the Google One app through the Google Play Store, separately from system updates. Updates add plan features, change how storage and backup settings are shown, and fix bugs. The app updates whether or not you have a paid plan.
Which packages are behind it?
One package:
- com.google.android.apps.subscriptions.red is Google One.
The package name is an internal one and does not match the app's public name. Device backup itself also involves Google Play services and the apps whose data is backed up, such as Google Photos and Google Contacts.
If something goes wrong
If a backup will not start or shows an error, work through Google's own checklist, checking after each step whether the backup works:
- Make sure the phone is online, and use Wi-Fi rather than mobile data if you can.
- Make sure the battery is charged.
- Install or update the Google One app.
- Open Google One and check your storage. If you are out of space, clear storage or buy more.
- In Google One, open Settings > Manage backup settings and review what is selected.
If you cannot find something you backed up, look in the app that stores it rather than in Google One: contacts are in Google Contacts, photos in Google Photos. Google's backup help also warns that turning backup off deletes your device backups, and that backed-up data other than photos and videos is erased if you do not use the device for 57 days.
To bring the app back after disabling it with ADB:
adb shell pm enable com.google.android.apps.subscriptions.red
adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.apps.subscriptions.redPackage pages
Questions people ask
Do I need to pay for Google One?
No. The app works with the free 15 GB that comes with every Google account. Paid plans add storage and extras, and the app is where you would buy or cancel one.
Does removing the app cancel my Google One subscription?
No. A subscription belongs to your Google account; cancel it in the app or in your Google account's payments and subscriptions before removing the app if you want it to stop.
