What is Game Optimizing Service?

Game Optimizing Service, often shortened to GOS, is a Samsung system service on Galaxy phones that manages processor and graphics performance while you play games, with the aim of keeping the phone from overheating during long sessions. It works behind Samsung's Game Booster and Game Launcher (now Gaming Hub) features, and its package name is com.samsung.android.game.gos.

GOS made headlines in early 2022, when Galaxy owners in Korea found that it applied performance limits to a list of around 10,000 apps, including some that were not games, while benchmark apps were not on the list. Samsung's response, reported by Android Authority and Notebookcheck, was that GOS is meant to help games perform well while managing heat, and that apps other than games do not have their processor, graphics or screen resolution capped. Samsung then updated Game Launcher with a new setting in Game Booster's Labs area, so players could choose speed over temperature.

GOS has no icon. You see it in Settings > Apps with system apps shown, and sometimes in battery lists after gaming.

Can I disable it?

You can disable it only with ADB, and it is an advanced change because Samsung's game features lean on it and the phone may run hotter in games without it. Settings does not offer a Disable button for GOS. The ADB command is:

adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.samsung.android.game.gos

What changes: Game Booster's performance and temperature controls may stop working or disappear, and games run without GOS's limits. That can mean higher frame rates for a few minutes, but the phone's own heat protection still throttles the processor once it gets hot, so long sessions are often no faster and the phone gets warmer. Community reports also describe Game Booster misbehaving after GOS is removed.

For most players the better route is Samsung's own setting. Open a game through Game Launcher or Gaming Hub, swipe up for the Game Booster panel, and look in its settings or Labs area for the game performance option, where you can favor performance over temperature.

Does it drain battery or data?

It usually saves battery rather than wasting it, because its job is to cap how hard the chip works during games. It runs mainly while a game is open, plus an occasional background check, so a small entry in battery lists after a gaming session is normal.

If GOS shows heavy use when you have not been playing, an app it treats as a game may be running in the background, such as a game that keeps a service active. Check the battery screen for a game app with background activity and restrict it.

Data use is minimal and comes mostly from its own updates through the Galaxy Store.

Why did it just update?

It updated because Samsung ships Game Optimizing Service updates through the Galaxy Store, alongside Game Launcher and Game Booster updates and outside One UI system updates. Updates add tuning for new games and devices, change how performance and heat are balanced, and fix bugs.

The 2022 change is an example: Samsung delivered the new performance option through app updates rather than a full system update.

Which packages are behind it?

One package is Game Optimizing Service itself:

  • com.samsung.android.game.gos is Game Optimizing Service.

It works with two other Samsung gaming packages, which are separate apps:

  • com.samsung.android.game.gamehome is Game Launcher, now called Gaming Hub on recent phones.
  • com.samsung.android.game.gametools is Game Booster, the in-game panel.

If something goes wrong

If games stutter, run hot or feel capped, first update Game Optimizing Service, Game Launcher and Game Booster from the Galaxy Store, then restart the phone. Many complaints after a One UI update are fixed by those app updates.

Next, adjust the balance yourself: open the game, bring up the Game Booster panel, and change the game performance setting in Game Booster or its Labs area. Removing a thick case and avoiding play while charging also reduce throttling, since heat is what GOS is reacting to.

If Game Booster lost its controls after you disabled GOS with ADB, turn it back on and restart:

adb shell pm enable com.samsung.android.game.gos
adb shell cmd package install-existing com.samsung.android.game.gos

If the problem is a single game, clear that game's cache or reinstall it before changing system settings; per-game issues are more often the game's own fault than GOS's.

Questions people ask

Does Game Optimizing Service slow down my phone?

It limits performance in games to control heat. In 2022 Samsung said it leaves the processor, graphics and screen resolution of apps other than games alone, and it added a setting in Game Booster's Labs area that puts performance first.

Will my games run faster without it?

Sometimes for a short while, but the phone's own heat protection still steps in when it gets hot, so long sessions often end up no faster and the phone runs warmer.
